This book locates the Sri Sri Ramakrishna Kathamrita within the critical framework suggested by Mikhail Bakhtin in The Dialogic Imagination, where he posits that the novel is intensely dialogic or dialogue-ridden. Through his multiple interactions with leading intellectuals of the time like Keshab Chandra Sen, Girish Ghosh, Dr. Mahendralal Sarkar, Mahendranath Gupta, and also Narendranath Dutta, Sri Ramakrishna posits the power of urjita bhakti whereby a devotee exists in a state of joyous freedom that enables engagement with the world without being entrapped in it. Sri Ramakrishna insisted that God was the highest rasa of all and loksiksha should be the prerogative of those who ardently followed sadhana in their lives.

About Author

Professor Sreemati Mukherjee teaches in the Department of Performing Arts at Presidency University. She was a Fulbright Visiting Lecturer Fellow to the Department of English and Comparative Literature at San Diego State University in the Fall of 2011. Her areas of academic competence are Feminist Theory, Narrative Studies, Postcolonial Theory and Literature, Performance Theories, and Theatre Studies. She has five books, of which one is edited, and two are her translated works. Besides, Mukherjee has several articles on Toni Morrison, Maxine Hong Kingston, Simone Schwarz-Bart, Mahasweta Devi, Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, Sadat Hasan Manto, and V.S. Naipaul, published in collections brought out by Routledge (India), Amsterdam University Press, Pencraft International, Litteraria Pragensia, Oxford Journals, JSL, among other imprints. She also makes documentary films from time to time.
